ROK Sends a Private-Public Joint Delegation for Security Cooperation to El Salvador and Honduras

1. The Foreign Ministry, together with the Korean National Police Agency, sent a private-public joint delegation for security cooperation (head: Lee Cheol-sung, chief of the Korean National Police Agency’s Intelligence Bureau) to El Salvador and Honduras on October 27-31 in order to help Central America improve security, one of the most important issues for the region, and to further promote mutually-beneficial cooperation in related areas.

o The delegation consisted of twelve people from the Foreign Ministry, the Korean National Police Agency, the Korea International Cooperation Agency and related companies.

2. During their visit to El Salvador on October 27-29, the delegation held security consultations and business-to-business meetings and met with high-level officials of the country’s police agency. In the meetings, the two sides discussed ways to enhance security cooperation between the ROK and El Salvador, studied the current state of El Salvador’s security industry and explored the prospects for the ROK companies’ entry into the country.

3. During their visit to Honduras on October 29-31, the delegation held security consultations and met with high-level officials in charge of security matters. The delegation introduced the ROK companies’ advanced technologies and experiences and requested the Honduran government help more ROK companies do business in the country.

o In addition, the delegation requested the Honduran side’s special attention and support to ensure the safety of the ROK people and companies in the country. In response, the Honduran side promised to provide active support and cooperation.

4. During the delegation’s visit to El Salvador and Honduras, not only the two countries’ government agencies but also related businesses showed significant interest in increasing security cooperation with the ROK. The visit helped raise the possibility of mutually-beneficial cooperation in related areas in the future and laid an important foundation for more ROK companies’ entry into the countries.

5. The ROK government’s participation in Central America’s efforts to improve security, one of the most pressing issues for the region, demonstrates the ROK’s willingness to pursue co-prosperity through the enhancement of mutually-beneficial cooperation between the ROK and Central America and to ensure that the ROK people and companies overseas live in safety and happiness.

6. In addition to the latest dispatch of the delegation, the ROK government will continue to make efforts to promote security cooperation with Central American countries, including holding seminars on security cooperation.
